USB-C PD Explained: What It Is and Why Your Next Charger Needs It

You’ve probably seen “USB-C PD” on charger boxes, but what does it actually mean for your daily charging experience? Here’s the simple breakdown.

What is USB-C PD?

USB-C PD (Power Delivery) is a fast-charging standard that allows devices and chargers to negotiate the optimal voltage and current. Instead of the old one-size-fits-all 5V charging, PD can intelligently deliver anywhere from 5V to 48V.

In plain English: Your charger and device have a quick conversation. “How much power can you handle?” “I need 45W.” “Here you go.” This happens in milliseconds.

Why PD Matters

1. Universal Compatibility

One USB-C PD charger can charge your phone, tablet, laptop, Nintendo Switch, and earbuds. Different devices, one charger, one cable.

2. Actually Fast

PD can deliver up to 240W of power (PD 3.1). For most people:

  • Phone: 0 to 50% in about 20-30 minutes
  • Laptop: Full charge in 1.5-2 hours
  • Tablet: Full charge in about 1 hour

3. Safe

PD includes built-in safety negotiation. Your charger will never deliver more power than your device can handle. A 100W charger safely charges your 20W phone – it just delivers 20W.

PD Versions at a Glance

Version Max Power Key Feature
PD 2.0 100W Standard fast charging
PD 3.0 100W PPS (finer voltage control)
PD 3.1 240W Extended Power Range (laptops, monitors)

What Devices Support PD?

Almost all modern devices:

  • All iPhones (iPhone 8 and later)
  • All Samsung Galaxy (S8 and later)
  • MacBooks (all USB-C models)
  • iPads (USB-C models)
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Most USB-C laptops (Dell, Lenovo, HP, ASUS)

Quick Tips

  • Always use a USB-C to USB-C cable for PD charging (USB-A cables don’t support PD)
  • Check the wattage – a 20W PD charger is fast for phones but too weak for laptops
  • Look for “PD” or “Power Delivery” on the box – not all USB-C chargers support PD
